COMMENT from Bruce Herbert on Aug 3, 2009 Spring-Summer 2009: McDONALD'S. Newground successfully led a shareholder consortium that caused McDonald's to agree to study and reduce pesticide use in their North American potato supply chain (McDonald's is the largest potato user in North America, if not the world). This historic agreement was reached in conjunction with other shareholders (the Bard College endowment and the AFL-CIO), with the scientific and technical assistance of the Investor Environmental Health Network (IEHN: www.iehn.org). STARBUCKS. Newground successfully concluded a negotiation with Starbucks through which the company agreed to disclose all contributions it makes to political entities, and/or to trade associations and related parties for political purposes. The transparency and accountability created by such disclosure are essential to cleaning up politics. Currently, more than 40% of the trend-setting S&P 100 companies have adopted similar disclosure policies -- which are rapidly becoming considered a corporate governance 'best practice.'
