I create seashells and animals using a man-made clay. I have been involved in Indian
justice issues my whole life and doing these forms relaxes me. It is as if the pain of
knowing and writing on our land history is transformed into peaceful animals. It shows me
that there is hope. Some of the animals I make are black bears, birds, cobras, ducks,
octopi, penquins, swans, turtles, flamingos, snails, otters, pigs, seahorses, owls etc. I
first take beige clay and then add different colors of clay to make an egg that looks like
wood, marble or a mineral. I then take my left thumb and first finger and gently pinch
and pull the animal out of the clay. I transform the egg. I don't destroy the egg. So I
show the power of transforming something negative (my pain) into something positive. With
the seashells I like to teach the concept of Unity in Diversity. Showing different colors
rolled together to simulate the colors of a seashell and yet the colors are distinct. My
writing and art reflect my Bahai Faith.
