The federally accredited Maryland Organic Certification Program (MOCP)
certified 78 farms along with twelve handlers of organic products in Maryland in
2004. The program also registered an additional 15 farms as organic that are
exempt from the certification requirements.
Maryland organic producers and
handlers also have continued to benefit from the USDA Cost-Share Reimbursement
Program, which allowed MDA to reimburse 75 percent of the inspection costs
growers paid for certification. This cost-share program is expected to continue
until 2006.
