The La Plata County Humane Society was established as a 501C animal shelter in
1973. The shelter is directed by a board of nine elected volunteers. The shelter
has a capacity to house 49 dogs and 26 cats. The Shelter also has a receiving
area that can hold 9 dogs and up to 20 cats. The animals are isolated from the
general public for health precautions.
