A doula is an experienced, trained woman who provides continuous physical,
emotional, spiritual, and informed choice support before, during, and after
childbirth.
Studies have shown that when doulas attend birth, labors are
shorter with fewer complications, babies are healthier, and breastfeeding is
initiated more easily.
Megan Conca experienced gentle births with her own
children in Australia, supported birthing women for several years in Germany,
and has been practicing as a DONA-trained birth doula since 2006 in Corvallis
and Albany, Oregon. She also works as a biologist and writer.
Megan sees birth
as a rite of passage for parents, and believes in every woman's ability to give
birth from a place of empowerment. Childbirth is a natural process, not a
medical event. Women's bodies were made to grow babies and give birth.
